The Salvation Army Eastern Territory is Hiring a Summer Maintenance Assistant (June - August) Near Hartford, CT

Overview

Location: Camp CONNRI (Ashford, CT)

Status: Seasonal (June 1, 2024 – August 27, 2024)

Supervisor(s): Property Caretaker

Position Purpose: Assist in the maintenance and general repair of the camp’s buildings, grounds, equipment, and other facilities consistent with the mission and established policies and procedures of the camp.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to guidelines for staff responsibilities as found in The Salvation Army’s Employee Manuals.
  • Assist in general repairs and maintenance needs.
  • Assist in responding to emergencies with the Canteen during the workday as able.
  • Assist in the set-up and tear down of Stark Pavilion, CONNRI Lodge, campfire, etc.
  • Assist with lawn mowing, weed whacking, and other lawn maintenance.
  • Assist with the cleanliness and upkeep of storage areas, eliminating hazardous fire conditions.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings, as required.
  • Attend to specialized cleaning needs (i.e., removing gum, clearing cobwebs, spot cleaning carpets, etc.).
  • Clean the interior and exterior of vehicles.
  • Disinfect common touchpoints multiple times.
  • Empty all garbage and recyclable materials and place them in their proper dumpster containers at the end of each day.
  • Keep all assigned areas clean and neat, ensuring items are organized and put in their proper places.
  • Maintain positive relations with other staff members, suppliers, vendors, and professionals.
  • Monitor the lighting inside and outside the building; replace light bulbs as needed.
  • Obtain a thorough knowledge of all emergency shutoffs (water, gas, electrical, clean-out traps, fire extinguishers).
  • Perform routine and scheduled maintenance as requested.
  • Notify the supervisor of the need for contracted service maintenance.
  • Replenish supplies throughout the facilities as requested (toilet paper, soap, copy paper, lunchroom supplies, etc.).
  • Take water to program areas several times per day.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Participate in end-of-camp cleanup, addressing all living areas, program areas, and general camp areas.
  • Provide a consistent, positive, Christian example to campers and staff.
  • Serve as a positive and professional representative of The Salvation Army.
  • Strive to be a personal example in conduct, conversation, and attitude consistent with established policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle driver’s license.
  • Must be able to participate often in relatively strenuous physical activity, such as stacking chairs and moving tables, and must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals, and other documents.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment required.
  • Understanding the upkeep and care of the equipment used for cleaning is required.
  • Understanding cleaning compounds and chemicals and their safe, efficient use.
  • Prior experience with ground tools such as lawnmowers and weed whackers is
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to manage time and have excellent attention to detail.
  • Must subscribe to Salvation Army principles/mission and abide by the camp’s personnel policies and practices as outlined in the Camp Staff Manual, including leaving the campgrounds during staff breaks between camping periods. Smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages, using illegal drugs, and immoral conduct during the employment period will be grounds for immediate dismissal.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply proper behavior-management techniques.
  • Ability to relate to youth and adults positively and understand the developmental needs of youth.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in program areas designated camp program areas.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
